Hydrafinil (or 9-Fluorenol) is a wakefulness-promoting agent, countering sleepiness and inattention. It’s an analogue and pro-drug of modafinil (also known as Provigil) – a compound used by Airforce pilots on long missions to stay awake and alert.
Much of the body of scientific literature supporting Hydrafinil’s use is derived from that of modafinil, a very similar chemical cousin. Modafinil has a long half-life of ~twelve hours, though Hydrafinil has a somewhat shorter half-life of six to eight hours. Modafinil has been used by many armed forces for delayed onset of fatigue and improved vigilance and psychomotor activity , also improved motivation, co-ordination, willpower, and reaction times in patients[8,11], all with no greater perception of side effects than placebo. It has also been shown to enhance short-term visual memory and error-rates, as well as attention and information-processing[4,5]. There have been studies showing the decrease in impulsivity and increase in logical thinking , (which may be of use in trying to avoid procrastinating). The metabolite of modafinil, armodafinil, has been shown to improve long-term episodic memory in patients with sleep apnea .
Frequently Asked Questions
What is Hydrafinil? Why should I use it?
Hydrafinil is a ‘wakefulness promoting agents’. It’s ‘cousin’, Modafinil, improves alertness and brain functioning well enough to be used by the military, night-workers, and the jet-lagged. Perfect for use after a shitty night’s sleep, to stay up all night, or to increase performance and output on a regular day. Think of it as the next generation of Caffeine. Energy and attentiveness without the jitters, no racing heart, etc.
How quickly does Hydrafinil take effect?
About a half hour. You won’t feel it “hit”, it’s subtle; you’ll just feel like you’re in the zone after a great night’s sleep (even if you didn’t).
How long does it last?
Tricky question. It depends on what you’re doing, how hard you’re tasking yourself, etc. but its half-life is about 7 hours. I.e. After 7 hours it’ll be half as effective as it was at the start. That’s enough to get you through a whole work day, or a whole night of frantic last-minute work.
Is Hydrafinil legal?
Yes. It is not controlled in the USA (or Europe) and is therefore within the law to import
I’ve gone three days without sleep, why do I feel like crap?
Because you’ve gone three days without sleep. Your body needs sleep for all manner of functions, so whilst you’ll still feel pretty good (in comparison), your body will be begging you to go to sleep. Hydrafinil isn’t a sleep substitute, rather an answer for the lack of it.
When’s best to take it?
Morning – it’ll get you in the zone faster and delay the onset of mental fatigue. If pulling an all-nighter, take it as early as you can (afternoon is best, if not before), and re-dose every 8-12 hours, or as necessary.
Is there any other medication I should avoid when taking it?
There are some ‘major’ drug interactions (Celexa, Orlaam) but mainly it increases blood plasma concentration of medications (and alcohol) meaning you should try to avoid taking Hydrafinil (9-Fluorenol) close to other medications. If you’re currently on any meds, you should consult your doctor before taking Hydrafinil. There is another important interaction, however, ‘The Pill’ is effectively negated by Adrafinil, Modafinil, and it’s metabolites – something to bear in mind.
How can I increase it’s effectiveness?
Taking Hydrafinil when you’re already awake and alert (early morning, by lunchtime) increases vigilance/error-rate/reaction times/etc as well as delaying the onset of fatigue. Anecdotally, taking it with caffeine (a cup of coffee, Pro Plus, fat burner, etc) improves its effectiveness. We recommend you take it extremely slow in the combination with stimulants, Hydrafinil is similar to Modafinil and Adrafinil, but slightly different in its interactions.
What are the ingredients?/What’s in the capsule?
In each capsule: 50mg Hydrafinil, and a filler: Creatine Monohydrate – an amino-acid used because it has no negative nutritional impact and because it has been shown to be a neuroprotectant, improving brain function in larger doses.
Are there any medical implications?
You should always consult a doctor before you start any supplementation – continual use of adrafinil (a supplement/drug upstream from Hydrafinil and Modafinil) can be somewhat hard on the liver, but this has not been noted with either Modafinil or Hydrafinil, and was no more detrimental than a few drinks. Just to be safe, I wouldn’t recommend it if you have a family history of liver issues. Large doses of Modafinil can also increase anxiety, but this is also very rare and entirely fixed by reducing the dosage — increased anxiety hasn’t been reported with Hydrafinil, but it’s better to be safe than sorry.
Will it show up on a drugs test?
On a normal screening test, e.g. for a job? No. If you’re entering the Olympics? Potentially. Modafinil improves reaction times and oxygenation in the body and is therefore banned by most sporting associations, including WADA. I couldn’t say for certain 9-Fluorenol is being tested for in high levels of competition, but it’s not currently listed by WADA.
Can I use Hydrafinil as a replacement for coffee/energy drinks?
It won’t give you the same ‘energy’ as caffeine/Adderall/blah does, but it can reduce the need for such stimulants due to the awake and alert feeling Hydrafinil provides.
Does Hydrafinil have any side-effects?
Yes, though they are very rare. Reports have been made that show Modafinil (the drug that metabolises into Hydrafinil) has no more side-effects than placebo. Hydrafinil is far more potent than Modafinil, though, with doses of 50mg being equal to 200mg Modafinil, but has far fewer side-effects. Scientists believe this is the most ‘active’ part of modafinil and while it provides less ‘energy’ or stimulation, it’s more effective in waking you up. Hydrafinil doesn’t have the same long history of testing as Modafinil or Armodafinil, but as a relation of both, if you’ve tried either, you will likely already have had 9-Fluorenol in your system and you’re not dead yet! (Kidding, but it’s as safe as any research chemical can be: a closely related analogue from a well-studied drug).
Is Hydrafinil Vegetarian/Kosher?
The capsules we use are Vegetarian and Kosher certified, yep.
When/how often should I take Hydrafinil?
Depending upon how long you need to be focused and alert, it varies, but for use in a normal workday, it is best taken in the morning or around lunchtime – before your mental acuity starts to fade. For the purposes of staying up all night, since the half-life is roughly 7 hours, we recommend you re-dose every 8-11 hours to stay sharp, taking it first in mid-to-late afternoon. The efficacy of Hydrafinil won’t be lowered much if you take it when you are tired, but anecdotal reports suggest it works better and for longer if taken when you have more energy. I also recommend three days ‘off’ each week; every other day works just fine too. Like with most ‘drugs’ and supplements, I can’t predict long-term health effects far into the future. Modafinil has been used every day by narcoleptics for many many years without any problems, but we can’t accurately predict if a psychological malady will pop up twenty years from now. Cover yourself and use it sensibly. Eat your greens.
Is Hydrafinil addictive?
Not physiologically, and psychologically the chances of addiction are no greater than anything else. There is no ‘high,’ and both the related Adrafinil and Modafinil have been used successfully to treat drug and alcohol addictions in the past.
Is your packaging discreet?
Yes, very much so. There is nothing on the outside of the packaging to indicate what specifically is inside, or where the contents were bought from. It is a legal requirement to label the package with the contents for international shipment, so we use the moniker “Nutritional Supplements” as a vague descriptive. Shipments within Europe don’t need that disclaimer, however.
Shipping and Handling
Regular airmail is included in the price, and Royal Mail advises 3-5 working days for delivery – though this might be a little optimistic. Shipping to the UK is by First Class and usually arrives next day.
